Andrea Santoro, a Catholic priest and resident of Turkey, was murdered in the Santa Maria Church in Trabzon in 2006. A 16 year old youth was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for the murder. Despite suffering from extreme short-sightedness, the suspect was able to shoot Santoro 3 times from a distance of 40 meters.
The suspicions surrounding the case continue. The then head of the Trabzon Directorate of Security was Ramazan Akyurek, who is currently under investigation for alleged FETO activity, was also allegedly involved in the murder of journalist Hrant Dink.
